WORKSHOPS AND TRAININGS:
MANDALA ASSESSMENT REFRESHER AND SUPERVISION: Saturday, February 27,2010. This workshop is for those who have taken previous training in the mandala and are familiar with the Stages of the Great Round and are using this material in work with their clients .
This class provides a refresher and review of this material and time for questions and sharing. Cost $125 with a certificate of completion. Instructors: Phyllis Frame, ATR and Karen Montgomery, ATR. Flyer available.
INTRODUCTION TO SANDTRAY: Small group or individual sand tray training from 10-5pm on Saturdays. Date to be arranged. Includes didactic, additional educational material, and experience in working in the sand tray in different ways. It is based on the Sand Tray/Worldplay model, using techniques developed by Gisela Schubach De Domenico, PhD. Cost: $140 with a certificate of completion.
THE CHAKRA SYSTEM AND SELF HEALING: A MULTI-LEVEL APPROACH. Saturday, March 13, 2010 from 9-5pm. An all day chakra workshop with lecture, power point, sound and toning, guided imagery, color, and various creative exercises around the chakra system. $135 with a certificate of completion. THE LIFE CYCLE: COURSE IN MANDALA ASSESSMENT April 16-18,2010. A
3 day course with a certificate of completion based on art therapist, Joan Kellogg’s theory of The Archetypal Stages of the Great Round of the Mandala. This course . prepares you to use the mandala in your therapeutic and healing work. Includes lecture, slides, experiential mandalas and a course workbook. This course is meant for graduates of beginning courses in mandala assessment. It includes advanced work with color and stages of the great round of the mandala, case studies, experiential mandalas and additional ways of understanding and interpreting this material. She is the founder and director of the Round Oaks Creative Center, and has given art and mandala workshops throughout the country as well as publishing articles in professional journals on mandala and sandtray. Phyllis has had extensive training with Joan Kellogg, visionary art therapist and her work with the mandala, and also the sand tray-worldplay approach developed by Gisela Schubach DeDomenico, PhD. This winter, join a spirited group of adventurous souls as we immerse ourselves in DEEP PLAY in the ARTS to imagine new possibilities for shaping life as a full expression of self. We will use painting, dreamwork, clay, writing, poetry, collage, authentic movement, journal making and creative enactments to explore how art-making as a contemplative practice can help us build a bridge between our inner life and the actions we wish to take in the outer world, the life we imagine for ourselves.

Taught from an intermodal expressive arts perspective, participants will experience how the layering of art modalities enhances our capacity for artistic expression, self-awareness and re-imagining our lives. Each class will include time for individual art-making and reflection, community sharing and ritual, and ideas for shaping a personal arts-based practice to support you in cultivating courageous conversations with yourself and your art. All levels of experience welcome in this community art studio where everyone is an artist and a beginner as we follow our images towards new frontiers in our art and life. PAINTING FROM THE WILD SOUL

Within every woman there is a wild soul full of passion, creativity and inner wisdom. When we express ourselves authentically and artistically, we tap into the soulful nature of our being. Our images, feelings, metaphors and dreams arise from within to guide us in our everyday living.

During this 8-week class, we will journey into the wild soul through painting and visual journaling. Unique to this process is an intermodal expressive arts approach, which will introduce the layering of movement, painting and writing explorations to support you in expanding possibilities for authentic self-expression in art-making and in life. Every woman is creative and has the innate capacity to be an artist of her own life. These seasonal "mini retreats" offer a unique opportunity to luxuriate in creative and sacred space with other women as we nourish our inner lives and deepest potential. Through art-making and reflection, celebration and ceremony, we take time to listen attentively to the images and stories emerging from within. Visual art-making, poetry, movement, writing and music will be our companions and guides. As we engage the Creatress within, we will focus on strengthening our connection to the feminine, claiming our inner knowing and body wisdom, and becoming artists of our everyday lives. This is a wonderful gift to yourself, offering replenishment, inspiration and creative practices to support you in staying current with yourself while harvesting what is presently unfolding in your life.

DESCRIPTION: This is an in depth and timely course describing and working with the concept of the LIFE CYCLE, reflected in the stages of the Great Round Of the Mandala, developed by visionary art therapist, Joan Kellogg.
The mandala is a circular drawing, well known by Jungians as an indicator of internal processes. Jung referred to it as a “cryptogram (coded message) concerning the state of the self.” This mandala course includes concepts from psychosocial, physiological, and spiritual perspectives as they relate to our understanding of the meaning of colors and images found in mandala drawings.
Participants will be introduced to the mandala drawing and learn how to use it as a diagnostic and healing tool in work with others and for themselves. This course will include the historical background on the mandala form as seen in nature, art, myth, architecture, religion and ritual. The format will include lecture, illustrative slides, film and experiential activities including mandala art and poetry writing. It is based on Kellogg’s theory of the 13 Archetypal Stages in the Great Round of the Mandala, a comprehensive model for the development of human consciousness that fits into all cycles. Kellogg incorporated states of consciousness research with Jungian theory and cross-cultural studies, and theorized an organized system based on form, color, and symbols for understanding mandala drawings. This developmental model includes issues around birth, life, death, and rebirth and provides a map of human consciousness and evolution.
This training is for therapists, especially art or expressive therapists, or others in the fields of mental health, pastoral or spiritual counseling, or those interested in knowing more about this subject for their own growth and healing. It could be a refresher course for those who
who have taken earlier mandala assessment courses and wish to go deeper into this material.

Art of Surviving Sexual Assault Show: Glouchester, VA, October 2009

The Art of Surviving Sexual Violence:Stories of victimization and healing told by survivors of sexual violence through their own artwork and poetry.

The Art of Surviving exhibit will be displayed at The Laurel Center in Glouchester in October. VATA will be collaborating with the Laurel Center to offer an art therapy workshop as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The Art of Surviving is an exhibit of artwork and poetry created by survivors of sexual violence across Virginia. The art and poetry provides survivors, many of whom have felt silenced in their victimization, a voice with which to discuss sexual victimization and healing and to speak out about the realities of sexual violence and survivorship through artistic expression.The artists and poets who contributed their work to The Art of Surviving exhibit range in age from 19 to 75. They are college students, great-grandparents, military veterans, activists, artists, therapists, crisis center staff and volunteers, and self-defense instructors. Some of the artists created their art shortly after they were assaulted; some created it over 40 years later. A few created their artwork and poetry while staying in a domestic violence shelter or participating in a sexual assault support group. A few are professional artists. Many created their artwork on their own.

The Art of Surviving seeks to raise public awareness about the prevalence and scope of sexual violence, its impact on individuals, families, and communities, and the process of moving from victim of sexual violence to survivor. Our workshop is open to all those who seek an adventure in self exploration and spiritual transformation at Round Oaks Creative Center and Penn Park. Everyone brings: A journal for your stories, camera, small drum or rattle-like instrument, 20-30 labeled images in a basket, 5 photographs of seasons of your life, 5 natural objects from your own neighborhood; a sandtray with sand; and your favorite food to share for a potluck lunch on Saturday and Sunday. EVMS Graduate Art Therapy Program presents:Continuing Education: Sandplay from an Imaginal Perspective by Josie Abbenante, ATR-BC, LPATPresenter:Josie Abbenante, ATR-BC, LPAT currently resides near Laguna, New Mexico. She works with the New Mexico School for the Deaf, teaches for Pratt Institute, and maintains a small private practice in art therapy and sandplay. She has presented nationally and internationally on topics including archetypal art therapy, transition and threshold, art therapy with Deaf culture, art therapy and feminist theory, sandplay and art therapy, and the language of aesthetics and metaphor. INSTRUCTORS: Phyllis Frame is the founder & director of the Round Oaks Creative Center, and is a registered art therapist, having practiced in Charlottesville, VA for over 20 years. She was a founding board member of the Association of Mandala Teachers, now inactive, has given mandala and art therapy workshops at many conferences, and is a published author in numerous professional journals. g Karen Montgomery is a registered art therapist at North Spring Behavioral Healthcare in Leesburg, VA. She is certified in MARI Mandala Assessment, a Certified Sex Offender Treatment Provider, and has facilitated myriad workshops on the healing powers of mandalas, labyrinths, and chakras.
DESCRIPTION:
This workshop presents an in depth view of the 7 chakra energy centers in the body, coupled with experiential activities. It will reveal their importance in the healing of not only the body, but of the mind and spirit. This information is important to the person working with others as it brings together and adds a greater depth of understanding to the importance of an open chakra system to our mental, physical, and spiritual health. Many will be interested in this workshop for their own growth, as well. We will experience the chakras through many lenses and experiential activities such as sound (toning), guided imagery and visualization, drawing, and poetry. Each chakra is associated to a part of the body, a color, energy, archetype, and emotions. A power point presentation of mandalas reflecting the chakra energies as seen in Joan Kellogg’s theory of the Stages in the Great Round of the Mandala will be shown.

about and personally connect with the healing and transformational
gifts of wild animals in a variety of ways. Daniel will be teaching about
many of the Wild Earth Animal Essences, and through a series of exer-
cises and meditations, including experimentation with essences of your
choice,you will have the opportunity to journey within to connect with the
animals and receive guidance for your life.
